Project: New media centre for Kirkley High School – Suffolk County Council

Sector: Education

Project Team: OWL Architects, Michael Barclay Partnership, Johns Slater and Howard.

Purpose of the project:

Create innovative multi-functional centre for Kirkley High School and local media companies.

Overview:

Before work on this project could commence we had to excavate six metres from ground level and remove approximately 1,300m³ of soil. Once complete, and with reinforcements in place, this space was filled with approximately 225m³ of waterproof concrete. This area now forms the basement and ground level of the Kite Media Centre.

The structure of the building consists of glulam beams and columns. Exterior elevations comprise brickwork, render, timber cladding and concrete, and the roof is made of zalzip cladding, bitumen flat roofing and aluminium cladding.

The centre has:

  • Timber kiln dried flooring
  • Pumped insulation
  • Curved plastered walls
  • Vaulted and curved suspended ceilings
  • Three storey lift
  • Custom-built reception desk

This flagship project for Suffolk County Council was completed to budget and a timeline of 50 weeks. The client requested that the media centre replicated the shape of a boat, which we achieved with success.
