Beccles NHS Hospital

“PJ Spillings have a helpful, thoughtful and responsive approach to the projects we’ve worked on together for the NHS in Norfolk and Suffolk. We always see good quality workmanship, and find that they make the effort to properly understand what we’re looking for, and take the time to get things right.”

Project: New build pharmacy and training rooms

Sector: Health

Project Team: LSI Architects, Michael Barclay Partnership, Quadrant Surveying,
Mott MacDonald.

Purpose of the project:

Construct ground floor pharmacy and first floor training rooms and offices for Beccles Hospital.

For this project we built a 140m² pharmacy situated on the eastern elevation of Beccles
Hospital. The slightly angled shop front improves visibility to the healthcare centre, and
provides a degree of shelter from the elements.

Occupying an area of 350m², the new first floor training rooms and office space connect to
the original administration building on the north elevation. Access around the hospital has
been improved with new pathways and landscaping for public and staff.

The ground floor of the development takes the form of a brick screening wall, with full height
openings for windows and doors. The building envelope is set back and ‘folded’ at angles to
improve orientation to the surrounding buildings. This design is a visual contrast to the zinc
clad box of the first floor.

Structurally, this build was pushed to its limits with its cantilevered first floor concrete slab
and steel construction.

“There is always a really positive attitude towards accommodating the client’s wishes and getting the job done within the constraints of cost, time and quality. We particularly value their great communication, which is essential on all projects, and doubly so on complex jobs. All in all we find working with P J Spillings a rewarding and enjoyable experience.”
